Many non-government organizations (NGOs) including groups affiliated with Rotary International are providing relief and development assistance to alleviate abject poverty in sub-Saharan Africa. In Uganda, HIV/AIDS, malaria, and related health problems have contributed to a decline in life expectancy of almost twenty years in the last twenty years. Rotary International clubs from the US are partnering with clubs in Uganda in projects called "Adopt A Village" that address health and hunger issues through increasing nutrition, creating safe drinking water, and reducing the indicence of malaria.
